Application to CUNE Comics-in-Residencies in 2021 is now open.
In 2021, the programme is accepting applications from comic artists and professionals living in Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
There are two residency periods available in Helsinki, both taking place 19th August–16th September, 2021.
In Helsinki, the artists will work with Finnish Comics Society and the residencies will focus on producing new comics art, be that a publication, exhibition or a workshop. The artists will be accommodated at HIAP – International Artist Programme‘s Villa Eläintarha.
During the 1-month (max. 29 days) residencies, the selected artists will also be featured as Guests of Honour at Helsinki Comics Festival on 4th–5th September, 2021.
CUNE Comics-in-Residence Programme is supported by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture by Nordic Culture Point.
Residency benefits and accommodation
The residency benefits for the selected artists include:
- accommodation (each artist will be provided their own single room with use of shared communal spaces)
- a daily project allowance (30 €/day, 870 € max)
- return travel expenses.
The residency accommodation will be organized in partnership with HIAP at Villa Eläintarha.
Villa Eläintarha is an artist residency in a wooden villa in the centre of Helsinki, next to Töölönlahti bay. The vicinity of the bay and a peaceful park around the villa ensure a pleasant and quiet living environment. The busy Hakaniemi marketplace with shops and versatile transport connections is located only a five-minute walk from the villa. The Villa is also located only a five-minute walk from Finnish Comics Society’s office and gallery space, Comics Center. Helsinki main railway station is about a kilometre away and is easily accessible on foot.
The facilities in the villa offer residents a home-like environment. There are seven individually decorated single rooms. The residents share a living room equipped with a television, two bathrooms with shower, two toilets and a kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped for the residents to cook their meals. A washing machine and a tumble dryer are also available. The villa has a broadband internet connection.
